“C’mon!! It’ll be fun!” he pestered on.

“Umm... no... I can’t... you see I’ve already got some work!” she mumbled feebly.

“Oh! Please! What work! It’s the festive season! It’s only fun time now!” his voice sounded exasperated.

“Uff! I know it’s time for frolic but I have to attend to this job at hand!” she muttered with a sigh.

“C’mon!! You can’t do this for me?! C’mon!! Please!!” he frantically pleaded.

“Oh dear God!” she moaned, “How do I make you understand! I really can’t come!”

“Please!!! Please please please!!” was all that she heard from him.

“Uff!!!” she rolled her eyes, “Okay, I’ll make a quick meet with you before I go off.”

“Huh! What’s this job eh? So very important!” he sulked.

“Umm... aachhe48 ... something important... family...” she quietly uttered.

“Please!!” he sounded visibly cross, “You’ll have the whole night to enjoy with them”

She cut him short, “Yes, but that doesn’t mean I’ll neglect my duties.”

“Huff!!” he pouted, “Fine!! Do whatever you feel like.”

She clicked her tongue and her voice flickered softly, “Awww... okay I told you already I would meet you before I go, right?”

“Yeah... whatever!” he sounded glum.

“Awww.... c’mon na shona!” she started mewing.

And just like that, the male chivalrous heart, no longer able to hold his weight, drooped down before the lady-like softness.

It’s only natural for one to think that this was a conversation between two love-birds, and then smile knowingly about those times when one was torn between love and duty. Alaka was in the same position too, and as much she clicked her tongue, she knew this was much more than just the regular tug-of-war. All the while, she was playing the ladylove, with Jayanta over the other end of the phone, her heart caved in every time she lied about her engagement. ‘Family!’ she breathed inwardly, ‘Oh I wish that was it...’ It was becoming immensely tough for her nowadays to strike a balance between Neel and Jayanta, both demanding prominence and predominance in her life, and she was literally slicing herself into two to adjust to it. It had been quite some months that she was shuttling to and fro, trying to keep everything mellowed down and unnoticeable, but life was becoming harder by the day—suspicion could arise from anywhere and the fear was clawing in every second, as she gasped inwardly every time someone asked about something a bit too much. With the auspicious festivity around now, her guilty conscience was pricking like a cactus fern on a pogo stick! She screwed her eyes shut as her head throbbed, and her veins gulped down the pain and tension. ‘If only...’ her heart pined as she gradually was bowing down before Jayanta’s imploring voice, ‘...I knew what to do!’
